Tor Relays

We operate high bandwidth Tor relays for the general public to:

  • help safeguard privacy and freedom of expression online,
  • thwart commercial tracking,
  • thwart mass surveillance,
  • promote secure communication,
  • offer uncensored Internet access,
  • help make the Tor network more robust, faster and even more attractive for daily use with Tor Browser.

The operation of our Tor relays is partially supported by research grant "Future of Online Anonymity" - Work package "Improving Tor" , Austrian Science Fund (FWF): P30637-N31.

We also aim to tackle the following areas when operating our Tor relays:

  • Hardware: Our primary server runs on our own hardware.
  • Security: We care more about security than about uptime. Our relays run in OfflineMasterKey mode which protects long-term identity keys better than non-OfflineMasterKey mode.
  • IPv6: We try to have IPv6 connectivity on all our relays.
  • DNS: On exit-relays DNS configuration is also very important. We operate local resolvers incl. DNSSEC validation.
  • Automation is important to us.
  • Location Diversity: A distributed Tor network is stronger than a centralized one. Before our first relay went online, Austria had less than 50 Tor relays and made up less than 0.6% of the Tor network capacity. For this reason Vienna is not just the location of our foundation but also a good location for our Tor relays. We do not have in-Family diversity since all our relays are located in Austria, but the overall diversity on the Tor network is increased with our relays.
  • Autonomous System Diversity: Besides the geographical location also the logical network position is relevant. Tor relays should be distributed across many and well interconnected autonomous systems. Our primary Tor server is located in an autonomous system that was not used by any other Tor exit relay at the time, so it is a good place also from an AS diversity point of view.
  • Transparency: We try to be as transparent as possible on how we operate Tor relays.
